Tweedy - Sunken Treasure; Gold
Deer Tick - Easy; They've played this once (that I can remember) in the times that I've seen them. Providence, in the alley outside of Lupo's - stellar performance and one of my favorite songs.

Lindstrom - Lovesick: Electronic, club artist from Oslo, Norway. I've been a fan of his since his 2008 Where You Go I Go Too. Great for passive listening.
Clint Mansell - Lux Aeterna: From the score to Requiem for a Dream. The score is not really made for standalone listening, but this piece definitely stands out. He also did the score to The Fountain, which has some gems on it as well.
Illum Sphere Remix of Codex: Radiohead has been releasing remixes of the King of Limbs songs... similar to the contest they held for Reckoner after In Rainbows. This version of Codex represents a significant departure from the original but good nonetheless - definitely worth one listen, at least.

That first single doesn't get me nearly as excited for the new album as this trailer. If this is any indication then the album is gonna be sick.

Beck on Vinyl
What do you got on this Trabs?
"As music becomes more computer-based, it's lost some emotional impact. When I pull out vinyl-- which isn't that often anymore-- it's undeniable that I get a different feeling. There's a different physiology happening between the sound waves and the body that doesn't happen with music playing off the computer."
Anyway, I think that settles the debate of vinyl vs. digital.
This pitchfork interview with Beck (link is in the post below) is a really good read.

Beck on Performing "Live" to a Recording...
Pitchfork: I interviewed Thomas Mars from Phoenix when they won a Grammy last year, and he talked about how your 1997 Grammy performance of "Where It's At" had a big effect on him because it was so off-center.
B: That's interesting. So much felt like it was going into a black space at that time-- there was no way to register what it was doing or if it was just being ignored. Like, there was one time we were on the American Music Awards, and when we got there they told us that we had to play to a recording. I thought, "This is going to be really good because now I can just have the band do other things."
So the band stopped pretending to play within the first 30 seconds-- some people were doing calisthenics while others had gone in the audience and were just hanging out. My drummer was wearing a ski mask and playing with his hands. It might have been a little bit obnoxious or bratty, but it was so liberating-- just having Garth Brooks and Whitney Houston in the front row, not sure what was happening. It was one of those moments when the machine shudders for a second.
I saw the telecast later that night, and after about the first 30 seconds, they cut to the horns, and they were gone-- it was just empty microphones. And then you see somebody doing sit ups, and then they just cut to my face so you couldn't see anything. The rest of it was just on my face and shots of confused audience members. I do remember seeing a few little things, like a fist fight or somebody knocking down an amp, near my ear lobe in the frame. [laughs] That's the kind of thing you do in your 20s. But a few moments like that one felt like this last blast of something random.

Song: Roxanne. I was doing the Police today and ended up on Roxanne for four or five straight listens - Sting's vocal owned me. It really is off the charts, the vocal, has to be one of the top of all time, no?
Live Act: My Morning Jacket - obviously. No one that I listen to produces the sustained energy that they do during their shows. They are wild animals - definitely a must see when they come to your town. Check out 1:45 or so in that video - we were all shooting lightning out of our faces.
Album: I got nothing right now - I'm sure Sprinks will have something on Deer Tick's Divine Providence soon though.

Record Industry vs. Artists Over Song Rights
Bit of a long article from the NYT, but really a good read on the record companies getting ready to have to fight with artists over copyrighting.
The short version goes something like this:
- From the beginning, copyright law has favored record companies vs. artists. Basically because it considered artists employees of the record company and thus anything they created belonged to the company and not the artist.
- This has allowed record companies to make billions more than the artists that actually create the material.
- The law was overturned in the mid-70s but gave record companies 35 years of something like exclusive rights to material. Starting in 1978.
- After those 35 years artists can apply and maybe regain the rights to their material and re-release or do whatever they want with them to earn back some of the revenue to themselves.
- 35 years is up for the 1978 material in 2013, but artists must apply two years in advance (i.e., now). Meaning there are likely to be fights soon over some Springsteen, some Steve Miller Band, some Eagles, some Doobie Brotes, etc.
- This will be another blow to record company revenue (in addition to digital music, youtube, etc.; all of which we know nothing about)
- The record companies are supposedly going to continue fighting the "employee" angle.
- Just look at Springsteen one more time there. Does that look like anyone's employee to you?
It will be interesting to see how this turns out. What do you guys think? I tend to always side with the musicians - do we have any corporate sympathizers reading? If so, let's tango.

“After so many years of critics praising [and making fun of] us for our ‘folk’ and ‘country’ sounds, and hardly ever mentioning the fact that we’ve also recorded virtually dozens of other kinds of music, we wanted to make a record that was truer to our live set: raw, loud, heartfelt, and completely uninterested in whatever the hell the rest of the music industry is up to,” says McCauley. “The results are unlike anything you’ve heard on a Deer Tick album"
“Man, you can practically smell the sweat and the beer! Shit, you may even hear a guitar or two break somewhere in there!,” continues McCauley. “It’s got a little Exile, it’s got a little In Utero, it’s got a little Nilsson Schmilsson, but it’s 100% Deer-Fucking-Tick in our purest, and most carefree "
The tracklisting for Divine Providence is:
The Bump
Funny Word
Let’s All Go to the Bar
Clownin’ Around
Main Street
Chevy Express
Something to Brag About
Walkin Out the Door
Make Believe
Now It’s Your Turn

MMJ - B of A Pavillion
Definitely a great show - they were tight, played a great set list, had tons of energy and played for 2.5 hours, straight. The break between set and encore was like 60 seconds long. Some highlights:
My top three songs, in no order: Dancefloors, Wordless Chorus, Mahgeeta
Honorable mentions: One Big Holiday, Dondante (DL was saying watching that one is basically like going to the opera), Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. 2, the Run Thru jam, Golden (particularly the slide), the jam at the end of Off The Record was balls out.
Dancefloors into One Big Holiday to end it was probably the best show ending I've seen in a while.
Mahgeetah really brought back some good memories of seeing them at bonnaroo.
DL talking to that guy in Legals that asked whether they would play Librarian or Call Tyrone. DL tried to appease the guy by saying maybe and Jflex saying under his breath, "don't even humor him, just tell him no."
James had good things to say about Boston.

Man on Wire
I caught this last night streaming on NetFlix. Unbelievable movie. I highly recommend it. It's a documentary, that does not watch like a documentary, of a tight rope walker and his team that illegally set up and crossed a rope between the two WTC towers in 1974.
The whole story and how they prepared is fascinating. Definitely worth watching.

Had a little insomnia last night and caught the Drive By Truckers song "Everybody Needs Love" on Letterman. The tune has been in my head all day - not mindblowing, but catchy as hell. I remember walking by these guys at Bonnaroo one year and they were raucus and loud, so the popiness of this song may not be representative.

someway, baby, it's part of me, apart from me"
you're laying waste to Halloween
you fucked it friend, it's on its head, it struck the street
you're in Milwaukee, off your feet
...and at once i knew i was not magnificent
strayed above the highway aisle
(jagged vacance, thick with ice)
i could see for miles, miles, miles
3rd and Lake it burnt away, the hallway
was where we learned to celebrate
automatic bought the years you'd talk for me
that night you played me 'Lip Parade'
not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
saying nothing, that's enough for me
..and at once i knew i was not magnificent
hulled far from the highway aisle
(jagged vacance, thick with ice)
i could see for miles, miles, miles
christmas night, it clutched the light, the hallow bright
above my brother, i and tangled spines
we smoked the screen to make it what it was to be
now to know it my memory:

First heard these guys a few years back on fox's show the next great american rock band. Liked there sound a lot but could never find anything on them. For some reason they just popped back into my head today. Check out Liquid Love on their myspace page. Sounds a lot like Mick Jagger. Collyer if you could dig up a link for The Weather On Milk Mountain i'd be extremely impressed.
