Dave asked me this in Quincy last week, I guess it came out of a Bill Simmons / Chuck Klosterman podcast. You're in a fantasy league selecting a super group band, who do you select?
Let's post comments to select our fantasy bands - the order is below, I promise I did this randomly (I used MS Excel's random number generator). Subsequent rounds will maintain the same order but in reverse (i.e., the same pattern as a fantasy football draft in that last pick first round gets first pick second round). If you are not interested just post a "pass." If enough of us think this is homosexual then we'll scrap it.
Rules:
- 5 band members
- Every artist alive or dead is included (including Hendrix who was excluded by Simmons and Klosterman for some reason)
- Each artist can only do one thing in the band (e.g., Sting can only either be your bassist or singer but not both)
- No two current same band members can be in your super group - RT will be forced to separate the Robinson brothers
- Choices should take into account how the band will sound together but not how they will get along. Think Black Crowes or Oasis or the Beatles White Album, great sound despite inner turmoil.
Order:
1. SQ
2. Sprinkla
3. Joebo Cop
4. Drew
5. b
6. Q
7. McChete
8. Trabs
9. DL
10. RyTully
SQ is on the clock!
So we are allowed to pick one at a time?
ReplyDeleteI was going to pick my drummer, but I kind of feel like I would have gotten ripped for that because I'll be able to take him in the last round. So to avoid "Kicker Pickitis" I choose my lead singer:
Lead: Robert Plant
lead singer john mccauley
ReplyDeleteIsaac Brock, i'm building a roudy bunch.
ReplyDeleteT. Yorke - lead percussionist (not drummer)
ReplyDeleteNo idea what kind of band Drew is building.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a while to settle whether I should go with this pick or my singer, but I think there is less of a chance that this guy will be around next round so,
Hendrix - Lead Guitar
duane allman - lead guitar
ReplyDeleteMakes my decision easier, but completely changes the direction of my band and my vision...Jimmy Page...lead guitar.
ReplyDeleteMike mcready - lead guitar
ReplyDeleteKeith Richards - guitar
ReplyDeleteNick Drake by a country mile- on guit
ReplyDeleteChris Robinson - vox
ReplyDeleteJohn Bonham - drums
ReplyDeleteVan Morrison - vocals
ReplyDeleteEddie Vedder on the pipes...got mad range homebody...Drew, I'm still puzzled with your opener...
ReplyDeleteFirst Round Stats:
ReplyDelete- Artist Roles: 3 Front men, 6 lead guitarists, 1 percussionist
- Most represented era: 1970s (4) - R. Plant, D. Allman, J. Page, N. Drake. We have 4 artists from contemporary bands and 6 historical and no one really from the 80s yet.
- Most represented bands: Led Zeppelin (2)
- Artist with longest career (from first studio album w/ defining band): Keith Richards (47 years, 1964 to present)
- Artist with shortest career: Duane Allman (2 years, 1969 to 1971)
- Round 1 surprises: Isaac Brock at #3, no one from The Beatles
Yorke plays piano/synth/laptop all under the umbrella of percussionist to fit within the rule.
ReplyDeleteMaynard - lead vocalist
Jim James vocals
ReplyDeleteI like the van pick
Jim Morrison - front man.
ReplyDeleteRealized that I put myself in a bit of a corner with the Hendrix pick. There are not many front men that I thought could match his presence and sing over his playing. Morrison is definitely the man for the job.
Isaac Brock - Lead Lisp
ReplyDeleteand i would like to welcome
keith Moon - Drums to the band.
Joe fly stole my pick so I am going with dave grohl on the pots and pans
ReplyDeleteI proved I can not drink anymore in a wholehearted fashion yesterday. What an embarassment, yikes. I pretty much laid out my entire band to Dave who had already guessed it anyway.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, for my next pick I'll take Flea on Bass
oh yes he did!
Round 2 Highlights:
ReplyDelete- Round 2 was the round of the front men (6 of the 10 picks went to lead vocals
- Three of four Zeppelin members have been chosen. Pearl Jam is in second for most prevalent band with two.
- DaveLane is the only remaining drafter to not have chosen his lead vocals. We wait with bated breath for him to eff it up.
- Early favorites (excluding my obvious front runner)? Q's bluesy duo, Bobby Sprinks's Nirvana reincarnation, Drew's thinking man's band, or DL's 60s/70s all stars.
- Bobby Sprinks has the most modern band so far; McCauley from this decade and Grohl from the 90s / 00s. b with the oldest, celebrating the 60s with Hendrix and Morrison.
- We have started to show our colors, honoring the bands we grew up with; 10 selections from post 90s (compared to 10 from 60s and 70s), but 7 that can be categorized as artists from the 90s (Yorke, Mcready, Flea, Grohl, Maynard, Vedder, Robinson)
- Surprises? No Beatles still, Cobain snuffed as a front man, Tully building an acoustic folk band, Joebo's band already banned from 50% of the arenas in the US and 75% of the hotels.
- We all know that Jeffrey has his full band and probably their first two album titles already sketched out in his head. Will they have the pedigree to make it through the voting round?
Jeff Buckley - backup vocals
ReplyDeletewait did i miss something? Quin gets another pick then collyer then me and then drew.
ReplyDeleteDrew is on auto pilot
ReplyDeleteMy fault. Buckley is still on the board.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I am telling everyone and their mothers about this draft. Mostly getting met with blank stares.
Drew is crazy with this whole order thing....I'm taking johnny green wood lead guitar
ReplyDeleteI think it is still actually SQ's turn here. He only chose one (Flea) and had the round 2/3 corner of the snake.
ReplyDeleteNo clue what's going on anymore..blame it on bledsoe
ReplyDeleteNew radiohead songs coming soon.....I knew it
ReplyDeleteYeah, I screwed this up. I felt like I ate a cigarette yesterday so pardon my brain fart.
ReplyDeleteFor my 3rd pick, drum roll please...and pun intended...Drummer Danny Carey.
I have no clue what my band is right now. Mishmash of hodgepodge and mediocre safe picks.
so bobby are u keeping greeny?
ReplyDelete"Before Jimi went to the moon, Berry built the Rocket"
ReplyDeleteChuck Berry - Lead Guitar.
I was so tempted to take prince here.
Joe, I think Bride of Chuck Berry is far more fitting for your crew...
ReplyDeleteIll keep johnny greenwood
ReplyDeleteSprinks and Drew, we have confirmed Greenwood and Buckley.
ReplyDeleteMy Round 3 pick...
...wait for it...wait for it...
Aretha Franklin - background vocals
Oh shit!
aretha got some big tittaayyys
ReplyDelete"Don't noBODY put ARETHA on backups! WHooooweee, boy, I'm bout to whoop your skinny little ass. Backup vocals! Lookit him, talkin bout backups - aint that some sheeeeeit" - Aretha just told me to tell you that.
ReplyDeleteRobbie Robertson, The Band - guitar
Drew- I take back my ignorance toward your first pick you savvy bastard...
ReplyDeleteI'm going with Gregg Allman on the elephant tusks...Power moves...
jack white - rhythm guitar
ReplyDeleteFirst Beatle off the board...
ReplyDeletePaul McCartney - bass
I hope someone takes whoever your lead voc is as their band manager at this point.
ReplyDeletePaul mccartney bass? This is getting weird and dumb
ReplyDeleteHahahaa
ReplyDeleteI totally agree....paul is one of the best songwritters of all time
ReplyDeleteI mean paul is supposedly great at bass but everyone prob associates him with singing songwritting...I don't know..let me know when its my pick
ReplyDelete"You weren't really dead were you? That was a hoax right?"
ReplyDeletegood thing McCartney was picked before Lennon otherwise he may have sued and generally pouted.
ReplyDeletei don't remember posting those comments about paul at all. This is weird.
ReplyDeleteJohn Densmore-Skins
ReplyDeleteRick Danko - Bass Fishing
ReplyDeleteTime for some vocals... Shannon Hoon
ReplyDeleteare there any rules to this? can aretha franklin really be considered a backing vocalist?
ReplyDeleteDave lane just dropped a bomb. I'm loving this shit....collyer do you hate this whole thing, or just the lane brotes?
ReplyDeleteCollyermudgeon
ReplyDeletePatrick Hallahan - drummer from another motha
ReplyDeleteBlane are we getting a recap or what? It's been 10 minutes....but hey, you set the bar high for recaps
ReplyDeleteGotta go with the lineman of the band...the bassist...John Entwistle
ReplyDeletePatrick carney, The Black Keys, drums
ReplyDeleteRound 3 Recap:
ReplyDelete- Another huge round for the 90s (4 of 10 artists); Danny Carey, Johnny Greenwood, Jeff Buckley, Jack White. 11 total from our formative decade, 8 from the 70s and 7 from the 60s - a true representation of the music that came out of the 90s or just that it's what we know best?
- First Beatle to go causes a ruckus! "Paul mccartney bass? This is getting weird and dumb." (Bobby Sprinks)
- Drew gets some props from Jeffrey after almost sabotaging the entire draft and losing 9 friends with his out-of-order snafus.
- Bands with multiple draftees: Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin (still our leaders with 3), Pearl Jam, Radiohead, The Doors, and Tool.
- A Few Surprises: 1. 80s getting a total snub? No U2 or The Police or any other shitty bands from that decade? 2. Jack White on rhythm guitar, a strong pickup by Bullo. 3. Tully doesn't actually take that long to pick, but still hasn't picked an artist with any testicles. 4. Davelane hates America; three brits in his band.
- Chris Cornell quote after being asked about Drew's Round 3 selection of Jeff Buckley "Listening to him sing — it's one of those indications that the human race isn't all bad and life is worth living and there is beauty and brilliance in humanity."
- Through R3, 6 of us are pulling a mix of contemporary and historical artists and 4 are sticking to pure play one way or the other (Sprinkla - cont, Drew - cont, b - hist, DL - hist)
I like it just don't get it I guess...very loose
ReplyDeleteRound 4 pickup:
ReplyDeleteGinger Baker - Drums (two bass, no kick)
Yeah, tough to really put rules on something like this. If we were putting money on it though we'd have to have been more strict.
ReplyDeleteAretha can sing anywhere, btw.
Fantasy draft related joke:
ReplyDelete"Has Jimmy Page been taken?"
(collectively) "YES! and you already reached your limit at that position."
"Geez, sorry."
To keep it consistent should picks 4-1 just puck at random?....the late round picks (6-10) are kicking some serious ass
ReplyDeleteKim Thayil - lead guitar
ReplyDeleteI almost took Cornell as a third vocalist, but I thought Collyer might send an assassin
really like the thayil selection...shocked corny hasnt been taken off the board...
ReplyDeletei should have to do a shot for saying his name though...he's still on the board...joe/dave, dont you guys do that at your fantasy football draft...
ReplyDeleteEmery usually brings a bottle of hennessey to the draft at Petro's. if you say someone's name who hasn't been taken or has already been taken you have to do a shot of the hennessey. It is the pits.
ReplyDeletefor my 4th selection i would like to nominate
ReplyDeleteDEE DEE RAMONE!!! - Bass
Thank god uncle Chuck is there to chaperone this group.
What do you guys say we start emailing different music magazines to see if they'd be willing to seed our bands based their rosters?
What do you mean Joe? Oh, seed, meaning rank, right?
ReplyDeleteI am definitely going to write up an e-mail to Simmons and Klosterman with our results, a link to the blog, and asking them to chime in on the winner.
In general, I think people would actually follow us, if we got the word out somehow and kept our content interesting.
Your band is an army battalion.
Actually, this should really be posed as a question to the group; whether we send any of this out and try to spread the word on the blog.
ReplyDeleteYeah, have them rank 'em so we can set up a bracket. I'm all for spreading the word. My band will cause a raucous.
ReplyDeleteyour band would've gone to UNLV Joe...Dee Dee Ramone...ahahahaha
ReplyDeletei am going to keep it real and pick a true backup vocalist....clare torry.
ReplyDeleteFor my 4th pick I'm going with Ben Folds on the ivory keyed machiney thing.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell is Quin's band? Quin doesn't have an answer either.
Annnnnnnd his final pick issssss
ReplyDeleteTrey Anastasio from Phish as the axe man.
Band Name: Fruitcake
you figure it out
Victor wooten bass....band name the awnsers
ReplyDeleteMalcolm Young - Rhythm Guitar
ReplyDeleteBand Name - Feral Beings.
Collyer, love the Clare Torry selection...She's white huh? She can wail...who would've thought...Joeflex, I was wondering if AC/DC would make the list.
ReplyDeleteyeah would've been a tragedy if they didn't. Surprised no one took Angus.
ReplyDeletei just took a shot of hennessey for name dropping.
ReplyDeleteOr super bon bon...he would've fit wonderfully with your band Joe...drink!
ReplyDeleteI thought she was black my whole life....once I find out she wasn't ....done deal...my group is unreal
ReplyDeleteim chomping at the bit here to complete my band...
ReplyDeleteRound 4 Wrap:
ReplyDelete- Even split between 90s/00s and 60s/70s; 5 artists each.
- A mixed round, but three drummers did go; Patrick Hallahan, Patrick Carney, and Ginger Baker (who probably gave lessons to the guys who gave lessons to Hallahan and Carney)
- DL finally picks his front man; not a bad choice at all. But he does veer from his group of 60s/70s all stars and McCartney reportedly argues with Hoon on day 1 about song writing credit.
- How does the Hoon pick stack up against the rest of our lead singers? Robert Plant (SQ), John McCauley (Sprinks), Isaac Brock (Joeflex), Maynard (Drew), Jim Morrison (b), Jim James (Q), Vedder (JMcS), Van Morrison (Trabs), and Chris Robinson (RT). A strong group indeed.
- After four, at least five of our groups are going with the more standard singer, lead g, bass, and drums lineup
- Anticipating round 5; 1. how will jflex close out his raucous band? (we already know the answer, and he did not disappoint). 2. will Drew and Sprinks stick to the contemporary themes or will they have to finally appreciate classic music? 3. can b.lane make a bad decision? 4. will Drew make his final pick before Chuck Berry dies? 5. will anyone pick up JPJ to close out the Zeppelin selections...and will that solidify Zeppelin as the finest collection of rock musicians ever with 3 selections in the first two rounds and a 4th in the fifth (if JPJ goes)? 6. Where is John Lennon? No place for him here? 7. Jeffrey's band is looking pretty frigging good (Vedder, Page, Entwistle, Gregg Allman) - how will he close it out (Wikipedia reports huge activity from an IP address at 53 Marlborough in Quincy)?
- Big suprise: We find out the woman who provides the chilling background vocals in Great Gig in the Sky is actually white...
hahahaha...classic...great ending to the review...
ReplyDeletejust hit reload for the 672nd time in two days...should we send the First 48 Hours crew after Drew?
ReplyDeleteLane, take a shot
ReplyDeleteBeethoven - lead songwriter
ReplyDeleteDrew, we gotta finish this up, clock runs out at 9:41PM tonight - 36 hours - to make your final, round 5 pick.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are not in any sort of trouble because boy will my face be red for having given a draft ultimatum. Maybe Sprinks really did assassinate him. Sprinks?
Weird. And now I really wish that I didn't send that comment.
ReplyDeleteBilly Preston - Hammond and other keys.
ReplyDeleteJohn stirratt, wilco, bass
ReplyDeleteFrom Jeffrey:
ReplyDeleteNeil Peart - Drums (Rush) with a drum kit the size of my bedroom.
Band Name - Eddy and the Mutts
Band Manager - McChete
i would like to introduce Colin Greenwood - Bass
ReplyDelete...in a close battle during band tryouts he beat out a hungry and energetic jeffrey mcsharry.
Band name: Reliant
First album: Ten Weeks Behind Evil Rainbows
Johnny Coltrane - horns
ReplyDeletehaha...i told bri lane my Manager business name was McNasty...I guess McChete is sticking...
ReplyDeleteNick Drake-guitar
ReplyDeleteCR-Vox
Danko-Bass
Densomore-Drums
Rythym Guitarist - Noel Gallahger
